1. Membership & Founding Members
Can I use SalsaMusicPlaylist for free?
Yes. Today you can open the live demo and explore playlists, artists and filters without an account. When version 1 launches, the demo is replaced by the real platform, which also has a free level. Free access lets you listen and explore, with a few limits: the best tracks of each artist stay hidden, you see three albums per artist and five genres, not all filters are available, and you can’t save or publish lists. Sharing links with friends is always free. A membership removes all of these limits.
What does a membership cost?
A membership costs CHF 39 for one year, or USD 24.90 per year in Latin America. There is no monthly plan and there are no hidden extras — one price, one year, everything included.
What is a founding member?
The first 500 people to join become founding members. They pay half the regular price — CHF 19.90 per year, or USD 9.90 in Latin America — and that price is guaranteed until the end of 2029, as long as they renew every year without a break. Founding members also have a say in which artists we add next. Once the 500 spots are taken, the offer ends.
What do I get as a member?
Everything the platform has: every track, complete discographies, all five filters, and the ability to build, save and publish your own songlists. You can rate and comment, and when you report an error that we fix, you’re rewarded. Your membership runs for one full year from the day you pay.
Do I have to pay now?
No. At the moment you only leave your email address, which reserves your founding-member spot. There is no payment and no obligation. When version 1 launches, founding members receive the first invitation and pay for their year at that point — and only if they still want to.
When does the platform launch?
Version 1 goes live once our funding round is complete. We don’t publish a date until it’s certain. Everyone on the list hears about the launch first, before the 500 founding-member spots open to the public.
Does my membership renew automatically?
No. A membership is a yearly contribution, not a subscription. It runs for twelve months and then simply ends. If you want another year, you renew it yourself — nothing is ever charged without your explicit decision.
Can I get my money back?
Yes. If you cancel within 14 days of payment, we refund the full amount, no questions asked. After those 14 days the membership runs until the end of its year, and since it never renews on its own, there is nothing you need to cancel.
Is YouTube Premium included? Will I hear ads?
No, YouTube Premium is not part of any membership. The music plays through YouTube’s official built-in player, and if YouTube shows ads, those are YouTube’s — we cannot remove them. If you want to listen without ads, you need your own YouTube Premium subscription; when you’re logged in to YouTube with it, our player runs ad-free too. What you pay for with us is the guide, not the music: the curation, the filters, the artist archive and the knowledge behind it.
Do you host the music? Is this legal?
We don’t store, copy or sell any music. Every track plays through YouTube’s official embedded player, used exactly the way YouTube permits, and the music stays on its original source. Everything around the music is ours: who recorded it, when and where, which genre, tempo and theme — and the playlists made by people who know salsa.
How can I pay, and is it secure?
At launch you can pay by credit or debit card worldwide through Stripe, and in Colombia also with Nequi. Payments are processed entirely by these providers; SalsaMusicPlaylist never sees or stores your card details.
How is this different from Spotify or YouTube?
Streaming services point their algorithm at you and guess what you’ll click next. We point our work at the music. We built a system that captures everything measurable automatically — release year, region, tempo, the theme of the lyrics — from reliable sources and from the recording itself. But the two things that need real judgement, genre and dance style, are not left to a machine: they are set by expert curators and collectors from around the world who have lived this music for decades. The result is guided discovery. You don’t get more of the same; you get shown where to go next.
What's the difference between a Playlist and a Songlist?
A playlist is made by us: a curated set of songs with a story and a reason behind it. A songlist is made by you: choose your filters, play the result straight through, save it and share it. The best songlists from the community become official playlists — with your name on them.
Is there an offer for dance schools?
Yes. A dance school takes one membership for the whole school: CHF 100 per year, and only CHF 50 for the first 50 schools. It works like a regular membership — you use it on the studio’s sound system for every class — but it comes with two extras. First, a school code: students who sign up with it get the founding-member price, CHF 19.90 or USD 9.90 per year, even after the 500 public spots are gone, and they see your class playlists in their own app. Second, your school is listed as a partner school on the platform.
Who is behind the platform?
SalsaMusicPlaylist is built by one independent founder with thirty years of collecting and dancing salsa, supported by a growing circle of curators and collectors who help build the playlists. There is no big company and no algorithm in charge.
Can I contribute?
Yes, in three ways. Report errors — every fix you trigger is rewarded. Publish good songlists — the best become official playlists. And if you collect salsa yourself, get in touch: we are looking for curators who want to build this with us.

2. The Platform
How big is SalsaMusicPlaylist today — and where is it going?
Today the catalogue holds more than 500 artists and 61,634 tracks, every one with a listening link, plus a knowledge base of thousands of verified facts from books and archives. About a thousand tracks carry a curated genre so far. In the first year after launch we grow to 5,000 artists and more than 250,000 tracks — always with the same rule: a track is added only once its facts are checked and its link works. We would rather grow a catalogue that is right than launch one that is big.
What is a playlist?
A playlist is a curated set of songs with a story: chosen, sequenced and explained by a curator who knows the music — the founder or one of the curators from around the world who work with us. Each playlist tells you why these songs belong together, and every song plays straight through via the built-in YouTube player. Playlists are sorted by genre, dance style and region, so you find the right one for tonight in seconds.
What is a songlist?
A songlist is your own collection. You can start one from a filter search — five filters: genre, tempo, region, era and theme; say, Salsa Dura from the 70s, fast, from Puerto Rico — or you can start it empty and give it a theme of your own: a mood, an occasion, a dance class, whatever you like. From then on, any song you come across anywhere on the platform — in a playlist, on an artist page, in a search — can be added to that list with one click. Build as many songlists as you want and add to them whenever you want. Every songlist plays straight through, and as a member you save, name, share and publish them. Send a songlist to a friend with a link, or publish it for everyone: published songlists can be rated and commented on by others, and the best of them become official playlists with your name on them.
What is the artist archive?
The archive is the encyclopedia behind everything. Each artist has a page with a biography in three languages, life dates and origin, the complete discography with album covers, every track with year, genre and tempo, and the collaborations with other artists. You also see the artist’s best-known songs and the most-played ones on the platform — the quickest way into an artist you don’t know yet. Facts come from reliable sources and from our knowledge base, and every fact carries its source. Browse by region, genre or era, or follow the links from artist to artist.
What is the community?
The community is the place where every published songlist lives. When you build a songlist, you decide: keep it private, or publish it. Published lists go into the community pool, where everyone can listen to them, rate them and comment on them. On the Songlists page we highlight five each week — Featured, New this week, Editor’s Pick, Most Popular and Community Pick. On the Community page you find those five again, plus every songlist ever published, and you filter them by genre, region or era to find the ones that fit you. The best community songlists become official playlists with the curator’s name on them.
What is the forum?
A moderated place to talk about the music: announcements, events and concerts, genres and music, dance styles, DJ and tech, and suggestions for the platform. Curated and spam-free, built for people who care about salsa — the opposite of social-media comment chaos.
Where does AI come in — and where doesn't it?
We use AI for four clearly defined jobs, all of which a person can check afterwards. First, it reads books and archives and extracts facts about artists and songs into our knowledge base — each fact with its source. Second, it reads a song’s lyrics and tells us what the song is about, so we can tag its theme. Third, it translates the biographies our curators write into German, English and Spanish. Fourth, in version 1, it turns a sentence you type — “romantic 80s salsa from New York” — into the right filters. What we don’t hand to AI is judgement: genre and dance style are decided by human curators, and every AI suggestion waits for a human decision before it appears in the app. Behind the scenes we are building a genre engine that learns from every decision our curators make. Over time it recognises the sound patterns behind each genre and proposes tags with growing accuracy — making the curators’ work faster, never replacing it. The final word always stays with a human ear.
What can I do in my account?
Your dashboard is your home on the platform. The overview shows your numbers at a glance — songlists, saved songs, ratings, saved playlists, submissions — and your recent activity. Under My Songlists you create new lists, edit them, keep them private or publish them, share them by link or post them to the forum, and see the ratings and comments they receive. Saved Songs holds every track you bookmarked, filterable by genre and tempo, so nothing you liked gets lost. Rated Songs lists everything you rated, from one to five stars. Saved Playlists keeps the curated playlists you want to come back to. Under Submissions you send a songlist to the curators and follow its way — submitted, shortlisted, selected, converted to an official playlist. In Curation you help improve the database: propose a genre or dance style for a song, and the curators check your proposal. Every contribution that gets accepted is rewarded. The Inbox collects all messages — from the curators, the forum and your ratings — and in Profile you manage your name, photo, bio and password. Founding members see their locked price and vote on which artists come next. Dance schools additionally manage their school code and see how many students have joined with it.
